How Food sensitivity can cause symptoms

Common Problems

The diagram above looks complicated doesn't it?

We are such complex creatures and when we eat, drink or exposed to substances that we react to it triggers our immune system into action, which causes certain cellular activations which then release substances in the body to overcome the cause and over time we develop symptoms. A chain reaction!

We hear so much these days about being gluten free, dairy free, this free and that free it makes you wonder what we can eat and drink. We do know, though, that many people have unknown and unidentified food and environmental sensitivities and once they stop the bread, the sugar, the dairy, the soap they use, detergent, perfumes, etc their symptoms disappear.

Doctors will tell you that you are not allergic to those foods and it doesn't matter if you eat them and while it is true that you don't have a true allergy you may have a sensitivity or intolerance which can lead to many health issues.

Everyday we eat, drink, smell and breath items to which we may have an allergy, sensitivity or intolerance. It can be from fumes we breath in, perfumes, skin products like soaps, detergents we wash our clothes with, air fresheners, car exhausts, truck exhausts, insecticides, pesticides - the list is endless.

The best way to examine sensitivity is through elimination of the food, product, substance from our environment - now that isn't always as easy said as done. Obviously we can't move to somewhere with no vehicles but we can eliminate foods and products from our own space and then reintroduce it after a period of time to see how we react.

Now the other thing to remember is it can take up to 3 - 4 days following exposure or ingestion of a substance/food before a reaction occurs but it is a good and inexpensive way to start the elimination process.

As a Functional Health and Wellness Consultant I can also add functional lab testing to see if there are any sensitivities/intolerances through blood testing or using biofeedback and detecting voltammetric signature aberrations in reactivity to a substance signature - in other words seeing how you body responds when exposed to the frequency pattern of that substance which enables us to better understand how our body reacts.

We don't do these to diagnose or offer cures we merely are looking for the underlying cause of your discomfort and indications of the level of stress your body is under so we are better able to understand the factors which affect our wellness and make any modifications necessary to overcome the stress.

Food Sensitivity symptoms

Below are the beginning symptoms of food sensitivity:

  • Mood Swings
  • Excess perspiration
  • Migraine and headaches
  • Weight problems
  • Asthma
  • Irregular heart beats
  • Irritable bowel
  • Bloating
  • Wheezing
  • Runny nose
  • Food cravings
  • Muscle, joint aches and pains
  • Indigestion
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Bladder issues
  • Fatigue
  • Hyperactivity
  • Skin problems

What to do about it

The first step is to eliminate those foods or substances you think may be the cause of your distress. You need to keep a food dairy and monitor your symptoms, your mood and do this for 7 days minimum before and after you stop the substance.

Make an appointment with your health practitioner who can do further investigation and set you up with a program specifically for you.

Once you do the repair work and behaviour modification, you might surprise yourself!
